Inspired by the works of John Ruskin and William Morris in England, the arts and crafts movement emulated earlier ideals of craftsmanship, turning away from the use of machines, as a direct reaction to industrialization in the 19th century. Gustav Stickley is the well known proponent of the movement in America. These men were the proponents of decorative design and handicraft whose aim was the creation of beautiful and significant artifacts.
